Pregnancy Dating Scan
This is an ultrasound scan of pregnant women at around 8 to 14 weeks of pregnancy. This is called the Pregnancy Dating Scan. This scan is basically used to see how far along in your pregnancy you are and check your baby’s development.
The pregnancy dating scan around 7-8 weeks is popular in India, in many countries, this is not the first scan.
Your doctor will book you a dating scan appointment. It is a normal ultrasound, and will usually take place at your local hospital ultrasound department. The person who will be performing the scan is called a sonographer.
You need to have a full bladder for this dating scan, as this makes the ultrasound image look clear. You can ask your doctor before the dating scan if this is the case. The dating scan usually takes about 20-30 minutes.
How is it done?
If you are going for an early pregnancy or dating scan at the sixth week, then the doctor would likely do a Transvaginal scan (TVS). This is because your baby is too small to be picked up on an abdominal scan. For the transvaginal ultrasound, you need to empty your bladder so that the bladder does not block the view of the baby.
Purpose of the Pregnancy Dating Scan?
You do not really need any ultrasound scan to confirm your pregnancy, you would already have done the test at home, blood test and would be experiencing various symptoms, doctors usually advise the early pregnancy scan to:
- Count the number of babies in the womb.
- Calculate the due date of the delivery.
- the presence of a heartbeat.
- the number of fetuses and gestation sacs.
- See if the baby inside the uterus is in the right position.
- or look for a reason for any problems if the patient is having any pain or bleeding.
